“A sense of calm and peace fills the mountain top air”
We work with families, friends and communities who come together through the art of backstrap weaving, keeping their tradition alive. Located in the remote highlands of Chiapas the sense of calm and peace which is in the air here feels infused into their textiles.
By collaborating with a social impact NPO which works on bringing economic stability to artisan communities around the world using a methodology based on ecological practices, human empowerment and financial inclusion, Routes Interiors was able to work with groups it may otherwise not have reached. Located in the high altitude mountains of Chiapas, Angharad connected and collaborated with two groups of women working hard around their household tasks to keep their ancestors' traditions alive.
As artists of their craft, the women weave on the backstrap loom with incredibly intricate designs which may appear to be embroidered but they are in fact interwoven so carefully into the weft thread by thread. This is a time consuming process but the quality and art which is created is something that will be cherished time and time again.
