backstrap loom weavers
Pantelhó, Chiapas, Mexico
In the heart of Pantelho, Chiapas, we work with close-knit group of Mayan women artisans, united by the ancient art of backstrap loom weaving. Led by a mother-daughter duo, they weave together panels, stitch by stitch, to create exquisite throws and pillows using this zero waste technique..
As part of indigenous Mayan communities, this women’s run cooperative embodies the rich tapestry of tradition and craftsmanship and moves at its own gentle pace.
We witnessed the real spirit of community when we visited the village in March 2023. It's a place where the rhythmic dance of the backstrap loom resonates with the laughter and conversations of women who come together to weave while keeping traditions alive.
